The short and simple answer is “Yes!”. You need nourishment to provide you energy throughout labor because, as the name suggests, you will be working hard to welcome your baby into the world.
In early labor, foods that are light, easily digestible, high carb, low fat, and in small portions are best to keep your energy high and feeling good. Hydration is also a must for the entire duration of your labor! Have your partner or doula on standby with a cup of refreshing goodness (don’t forget the straw!) to give you a boost of energy. Coconut water is perfect for the demands of labor because it is full of electrolytes. Eating a tablespoon or two of honey also serves as a great pick-me-up. In my doula bag, I have flavored honey sticks to give a quick boost to laboring mamas. And if you’re up for it, I highly recommend having a yummy, fresh smoothie during early labor. Just donāt forget the dates because they help to tone the uterus and provide effective surges/contractions. Read below for some yummy smoothie recipes you can try!
I recommend that you discuss with your Medical Provider the hospitalās protocol regarding eating and drinking in labor, especially if you are having a Cesarean (C-section). Typically, there are no food and drink restrictions for births occurring at Birth Centers or at your home.
