With Cultural Appropriation on the rise in the Natural Parenting World, it is so important that we honor and celebrate those people groups whose cultures and traditions were the pioneers and creators of many of the practices and products that we use today. Unfortunately, Cultural Appropriation is very blatant in the Babywearing Community. It is important that we recognize it when we see it, and then call it out. No, this is NOT “cancel culture” or “brand shaming” but simply holding our fellow Human accountable. Traditions and cultures were meant to be shared, but they were also meant to be honored, respected, and acknowledge.
The Babywearing retail space is over-saturated with brands that do not represent the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. This space is to highlight the many amazing Black-Owned Babywearing Brands worldwide. (I will create a separate space for all BIPOC Babywearing Brands soon!) If you have found yourself here, I strongly recommend that you support these brands by purchasing a stretchy wrap, woven wrap, hybrid, SSC, ring sling, Meh Dai, and/or African Khanga/Chitenge for yourself, your Expecting Friend, a local carrier lending library, a Birth/Postpartum client, or even consider reaching out to them for wholesale opportunities so that you can sell these items in your retail store.

I will update this list periodically as needed. Please send me an email at hello@themamaconnect.com if you find errors to this list or have a suggestion of another Black-owned Babywearing Brand to be included.
